What can your local council do for you?

The City of Melton: Get to know your local council.

Across Victoria, area based representative governments oversee communities and electorates. Called ‘councils’, these groups manage local issues as well as plan and manage the needs of the residents. More specifically, councils manage economic, social, and cultural development within the municipal area they oversee, including supporting individuals and groups and providing a range of services to promote the wellbeing of the community.

Councils work closely with their community to implement policies and regulations, including those set by higher levels of government, as well as organise and deliver community infrastructure and programs funded by rates collected from individuals and businesses within their municipality.

Council services and responsibilities.

All Victorian councils have similar roles and responsibilities. In fact, every time you leave your house, you’re probably using services provided by your local council, which also manages and maintains most of the surrounding communal infrastructure and facilities including roads, community centres, sporting facilities, playgrounds, and parks.

Different councils offer a variety of services and infrastructure depending on the needs of the local community. Modeina estate sits within the City of Melton, which offers a range of services across the following areas:
